Civic Education and Character Education Resources

Civic education promotes responsible and informed participation in the democratic process, by instructing students in the principles that inform us as Americans, the institutions that comprise our society, and the activities required of us if we are to perpetuate our democratic ways. Character education promotes the moral development of students by teaching universal virtues, such as justice, fairness, caring, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. The resources in this section provide information about civic and character education, and suggest ways to incorporate both educational methods into service and service-learning programs.
